 Digital Configuration

To configure Digital camera options, right click on the Northern Eclipse desktop area, and then click on Properties.

This page of the Options menu allows changes to be made in Northern Eclipse to alter how digital cameras auto expose images (see Auto Expose).

The Use Device Auto Exposure check box, should be checked if the camera manufacture has built in auto exposure. Most Digital cameras do not have this feature so if you are unsure leave it unchecked because Northern Eclipse will calculate exposures in software on all supported digital cameras.
The Starting Exposure should be set to a reasonably low setting. For example, if the lowest frame time of a camera is 1/12 of a second, the 84 milliseconds would be a reasonable value to use. This value is then used for the first exposure test during Auto Exposure.

A reasonable value for the Upper Limit would be the either maximum exposure the camera is capable of or the maximum time you would like to wait. For example if you know that none of your images will ever require an exposure longer than 10 seconds, this would be a good choice because if for some reason no light is going to the camera (i.e. plunger on the microscope is not pulled out) and the Upper Limit is set to 10 minutes, you could be in for a long wait for a black picture. Maximum Retries should be set to the number of time you would like Northern Eclipse to keep trying to get the perfect exposure (6 to 10 would be a reasonable range). Fill Goal (%) is the dynamic range percentage that you would be happy with during auto exposure. For example if you have an 8 bit image, what range of gray fill between 0 and 255 would acceptable? A setting of 65% would mean that if 166 gray levels had data the Auto Exposure function would accept the image as being properly exposed and it would appear on your desktop. (a range of 65 to 90 % would be a reasonable setting for Fill Goal)
The Auto Exposure Acquire Loop start check box, when checked, forces Auto Exposure to take place at the start of each Acquire Loop (see Acquire Loop)

The Control Exposure during Acquire loop check box, when checked, allows the Exposure, Gain and Offset control to be adjusted during loop acquisition. The following dialog box will appear:
